Finding Grant Money to Go to School On

For many people, the idea of going to college can be one of excitement and dread. They have the grades to get into college but may not have high enough scores on tests, such as the ACT or the SAT to win them scholarships. They fear that they may never be able to pay for school. Student financial aid is a big worry because they need to get some grant money to go to college. Thankfully, there is federal government grant money out there for students that want to attend college, who otherwise would be out of luck with secondary education.

The first step to finding grant money to pay for school is to take the ACT or SAT. This test is usually required by the college. Your next step will be to fill out the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. There will be questions about your income and your parent's income if you are still a dependant. If you are an adult seeking education, then the amount you will be awarded will be based on your income. The results of the FAFSA will generate a Student Aid Report or SAR.

The Student Aid Report will give a monetary amount of the financial aid for which you will qualify. It can range from a few hundred dollars on up to four thousand dollars and can be used for tuition, room and board, books and other expenses. The great thing about this form of money, unlike loans, is that it does not have to be repaid once you graduate. That makes it much easier to go to school without worrying about accumulating a huge amount of debt. You still may need to take out loans but at least this federal student aid can help you offset the number of loans you will need.

Grant money to go to school is out there but it is going to require that you make a dedicated effort. You have to use your previous year's taxes to fill out the FAFSA for the upcoming school year. If you are not a dependant of your parents, then your case will be based upon your previous year's income. If you need help filling out the FAFSA or have questions about how to receive grant money for college, contact the university's financial aid department.
