Finding those Free Government Grants
You have probably seen those wacky commercials of the guy in the money suit that is hawking his newest book on how to find free government grants, for anything from going back to school to owning your own business. But did you actually buy into his hype? Well, if you did not then you should have because he is not wrong. He just compiled the information for you in one book. The information is still out there if you know where and what to look for, just in case you want to get your hands on some of the stuff.
Federal government grants are awarded for a variety of reasons. Probably the number one example is the Pell Grant given to people entering into college to help offset the cost of tuition, books, and room and board. They are able to do this by filling out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (the FAFSA).
The student fills out the FAFSA using his or her personal information, such as social security number, address and last year's tax return and receives a Student Aid Report. The SAR will show how much money the person is able to get, along with the disbursement date. Any questions can usually be answered by the college's financial aid office.
Free government grants also exist for people who want to own their own business. This type of grant does take some planning, a lot of paperwork and some leg work. It is not the easiest way to get start-up capital but it is a way. Most grants require a written proposal of what the grant money will be used for, along with a detailed business plan. If you do not have experience with either of these, then you can always consider hiring or consulting with someone who does know how to write a business plan and proposal.
Matthew Lesko has made finding free government grants easy but even he cannot guarantee that you will get the grant once you have applied. There are a limited amount of funds and many people wanting a piece of those funds. The best chance you have is to prepare your paperwork thoroughly and get help with anything that may not be clear to you. Free grant money does not come without strings attached. They do not just hand it out to anyone who asks. There will be paperwork involved and they may want to know your background.
